The Virgin of Quito (Spanish, La Virgen de Quito) also known as the Virgin of the Apocalypse, Winged Virgin of Quito, Dancing Madonna, and Legarda's Virgin is a wooden sculpture. It represents the immaculate conception, the rising to the heavens, and the victory over the sin, as a snake is being crushed and hold by a chain.
The sculpture making begins when choosing the correct piece of cedar wood(it must be dry and compact). Once chosen, the artist handcarves the virgin's shape. After the carving process is done, the wood is coated with different products that assure the long life lasting of the sculpture.
Once the mentioned above process is done, the artist proceeds to make and put the glass hand made eyes of the piece, all of these before it is painted with natural inks and real gold paint.
the last step is the silver plating wings and crown that characterized this virgin.
