Ecuador Aruchico Dancer
Description
The first step on making this Art piece consist on stretching clay with a wooden roller over different texture cloths. This way we obtain pieces of clay with different patterns that give shape to the body, then it is attached to accessories such us ropes, hats , bells and whips, according to the ethnicity they represent.
The most important part of the process is the final paint job. The appropriate colors must be chosen for each garment to give character to the respective ethnic group costume.
The outfits are used to celebrate festivities such as INTI-RAIMI, CORPUS CRISTI and others. The different colors on them are superstitious and thought by each ethnic group to chase away evil spirits. This mentioned festivities are a result of the mixture between Hispanic and Indigenous cultures, locally called “folklore”.
