Description

One of only three. Woven by name, not by machine.

This is the summit of the Panama hat — a Montecristi Superfino, the finest grade the toquilla art produces. The weave is so tight the straw stops looking like straw and starts to feel like linen. Hold it to the light and the pattern seems to dissolve.

Three months. The hands of the Pachay family.

This hat was woven over three months in Montecristi, Ecuador, by the Pachay family — four generations of master weavers, and one of the names most deeply bound to the legend of the Montecristi hat.

They work before dawn, when the coastal humidity keeps the fibre soft, weaving only a few hours a day so the straw never dries and splits. Thousands of strands of paja toquilla, drawn tighter and tighter by hand, until the weave reaches the grade that inspired the legends — the Superfino, spoken of as fine enough to hold water and pass through a wedding ring.

Who are the Pachay?

The Pachay are Montecristi weaving royalty. Their craft carries Ecuador's denominación de origen for the Sombrero de Montecristi — a legal mark of authenticity granted only to true Montecristi artisans — and their work has been honoured by UNESCO, from Lima to the UNESCO house in Paris. When you wear a Pachay hat, you wear a signature.

Why it costs what it costs

You are not paying for a hat. You are paying for three months of a master family's time, four generations of skill in their hands, and a craft that fewer people can do every year. At this grade, the price isn't a markup — it's the honest cost of the hours. Buy it and you own the top of the category; there is nothing finer to move up to.

Authenticity, guaranteed

Sourced directly from the Pachay family in Montecristi — no middlemen, no imitations. This piece ships from our family house in Quito, backed by our authenticity guarantee and more than 30 years of trade in genuine toquilla craft.

Only three exist, in sizes 58, 59 and 60 — one hat in each. When a size is gone, it's gone.
